About BytesToMbps
BytesToMbps is a set of free calculators and guides for data rates, file transfer times and home internet speed. It converts between units such as MB/s and Mbps, works out how long a transfer takes, and helps a household decide how much speed it needs.
What the site does
- Unit conversion. The data rate converter and its sibling pages convert between bits and bytes, decimal and binary units, and every common rate from bps to GB/s.
- Transfer times. The download time calculator and its upload and file-transfer versions work out how long a file takes at a given speed, with an optional real-world efficiency setting.
- Internet speed. The internet speed calculator adds up what a household does at the same time and suggests a plan tier. Other tools work the other way, from a plan to what it supports, check a speed test against a plan, and estimate monthly data use and upload needs.
- Guides. Plain explanations of Mbps, MB/s, bits and bytes, latency, and how speed is measured.
The site is available in ten languages. The numbers and formulas are the same in every language.
Where the figures come from
Unit conversions are exact arithmetic on SI and IEC prefixes. Per-activity speeds come from what the services themselves publish (Netflix, YouTube, Zoom, NVIDIA and Twitch) or are clearly labelled as our estimates. The methodology page lists every formula, assumption and source, with the date the figures were last checked.
What the site is not
- Not an internet provider. BytesToMbps is not owned by or affiliated with any ISP.
- Not a speed test. Nothing here measures your connection. To measure it, use an established speed test such as Fast.com or Speedtest, then bring the result to the speed test checker.
- Not a plan finder. We don't check availability or prices at your address.
Our approach
Many speed advice pages are published by businesses that earn more when you buy a faster plan. We size needs from what happens at the busiest moment and say so plainly when a slower plan is enough. The site may show ads or include labelled affiliate links; how that works is set out in the terms of use, and it never changes a result.
